The perfect twin centre foodie break does exist. My theory has always been that for a tiny bit more travel time, multiple destinations in one trip can trick the mind into feeling like you have been away far longer than you actually have. I am not proposing the frantic, box ticking kind of travel, but something more relaxed where the landscape and food change along the way. I find these types of trips feel longer and more satisfying once you return because you are not just changing location, you are changing perspective and making more memories along the way.

A sensational twin centre combination is Lisbon and Funchal, two destinations that could not feel more different, yet sit seamlessly together in a Portuguese itinerary with a difference. With TAP Air Portugal offering direct routes from the UK to both, and Lisbon’s airport sitting just minutes from the city centre, the transition feels effortless. No wasted hours, just a smooth glide from urban chic to subtropical serenity.

Personally, I would start in Lisbon, a city alive with energy and a feast for the eyes and the belly alike. Check into Art Legacy Hotel, a Moori designed experiential hotel that radiates main character energy. It is perfectly placed for immediate exploring, moments from the Tagus River and the iconic Praça do Comércio, with terrace views stretching up to São Jorge Castle. Lisbon is the kind of city that does not make you work for its beauty. It is everywhere, which is exactly what makes it the perfect landing point for your twin centre foodie break in Portugal as you dont need to waste time orientating yourself or unearthing hidden gems.

Portugal continues to rise as one of Europe’s most exciting culinary destinations, now home to more than 50 Michelin starred restaurants. If you are looking for a standout experience, book a table at Restaurant Henrique Sá Pessoa by Henrique Sá Pessoa. His newly opened restaurant was awarded two Michelin stars at the Michelin Guide ceremony in Madeira earlier this year, and deservedly so.
The menu is a refined narrative of Portuguese identity. Seasonal and quietly theatrical, it reinterprets tradition with a modern touch, all delivered in a space that feels intimate yet design led. The open kitchen is a centrepiece that moves with confidence, while the service is polished in a way that truly screams two stars.

We feasted on a peri peri chicken snack so far removed from Nando’s it almost felt unfair to compare the two. Turbot with aubergine featured an ingenious layer created by removing the collagen from the fish and combining it with parsley to add incredible moisture to the dish. Another standout was the blue lobster with leeks, almond emulsion and corn. Then came a dessert inspired by the sea, blending seaweed elements into something both salty and sweet, a genuine conversation piece. By the final course, you feel as though you have walked the shoreline itself.
After a few days spent weaving through tiled façades, indulging in pastel de nata and soaking up Lisbon’s sights, my suggestion is to make the second leg of your holiday feel completely different. A short transfer and a 90 minute flight later, you arrive in Funchal on the island of Madeira. Still Portugal, yet it feels like another continent entirely.

The shift is immediate. As soon as you drive through the dramatic cliffs and lush green landscapes, you feel transported into a slightly surreal world. Madeira feels tropical, but without the oppressive humidity of more distant destinations. Thanks to its position in the Atlantic, you benefit from a refreshing breeze that keeps the climate beautifully balanced. It is a truly awe inspiring contrast to Lisbon and adds a more exotic, escapist feel to your trip.
High above Funchal, tucked into the hills, lies Casa Velha do Palheiro, a Relais & Châteaux property that delivers timeless country house elegance. Here you will find Oxalis, where Head Chef Gonçalo Bita Bota champions Madeiran heritage through a modern, 1 Michelin starred lens.

His Madeiran inspired snacks included a salty fish broth that instantly tantalised the tastebuds, followed by perfectly seared scallops with a laksa inspired sauce balanced carefully enough to let the scallops shine. An oxtail dish reduced with ginger and red wine was unctuous, comforting and deeply flavoursome in equal measure. The setting provides the perfect backdrop for his menu, where dishes feel both rooted in tradition and beautifully refined.

If you prefer to stay closer to the heartbeat of Funchal, Savoy Palace offers luxury on a grander scale. This stunning five star hotel is home to Portugal’s largest spa and a pool setting that provides the perfect relaxing end to your foodie twin centre holiday. If by this point you have had enough of travelling around, their Galaxia Skyfood restaurant is just a short lift ride away on the top floor, where you can soak up rooftop pool views across the mountains and Atlantic while you dine.

Upon boarding my TAP Air flight home, I felt I had seen and experienced a deeper dive into Portugal through this twin centre foodie break and I am not sure which I want to revisit more Lisbon or Funchal!
