Is this Mayfair’s first rooftop bar? It sounds unlikely, but when you stop and think about it, it almost makes sense.

For years, drinking in Mayfair has stayed close to the ground. The neighbourhood is full of Georgian townhouses, historic hotels and private members clubs where the best tables are often tucked away below street level. Places like Annabel’s and Harry’s Bar built their reputations on that intimate, slightly hidden feeling. The idea of heading upstairs for a drink feels like a much more modern shift, shaped by hotels rethinking how their spaces can be used.

That is where Stanley’s comes in.

Sitting above The Chesterfield Mayfair, this new rooftop bar from Red Carnation Hotels feels like a natural step forward rather than a dramatic change. It brings something fresh to Mayfair, but still feels rooted in the area.

I have always had a soft spot for Red Carnation. I still remember having dinner at The Milestone and being served a Kir Royale with the crème de cassis arriving in a tiny bottle with my name written on it. It is such a small thing, but it stayed with me. That same attention to detail is part of what makes the brand feel so personal. It is also where I first heard about Bea Tollman and her love of dogs, which still runs through the hotels today. Every Red Carnation property is dog friendly and Stanley’s continues that tradition.

When you arrive at Stanley’s, there is an immediate sense of story. Stanley Tollman is honoured through a beautiful pebble mosaic and a collection of photographs that give a glimpse into the history behind the brand. It feels thoughtful rather than showy.

The rooftop itself is carefully designed to work whatever the weather is doing. The retractable roof and enclosed sides mean you are not relying on sunshine to enjoy it, which in London feels like a very wise decision. It makes the space feel usable all year, not just for those rare hot days.

Inside, the look is classic with a gentle nod to the 1940s. The amber glow from the bar draws you in and creates a warm centre to the room, while the views across the London skyline remind you that you are somewhere special. It is elegant without feeling formal.

We visited in the late afternoon and shared chicken satay and prawns, which were exactly what we needed. Simple, well made and easy to enjoy with a drink as the day slows down.

The rooftop bar can host up to 60 guests, and you can easily imagine it working for a celebration. It has that balance of feeling intimate while still having enough energy for a gathering. Stanley’s is available for private hire and events. It would be a fabulous space for a birthday in the summer or product launch event.

It also brought back a memory for me. One Christmas, a friend of mine checked into The Chesterfield with her dog for a week because she needed a bit of time to herself. I went to visit her and we spent the afternoon drinking Bloody Marys, eating Caesar salad and chips in bed. It felt indulgent in the best way. No plans, no rush, just comfort. It is still one of the chicest versions of self care I have come across.

That same feeling runs through Stanley’s. It is not just about having a drink with a view. It is about feeling looked after, in a way that is easy and genuine. In a part of London that is known for holding on to tradition, Stanley’s rooftop bar manages to offer something new while still feeling completely at home.
