A tried and tested collagen cream that won’t break the bank

What do we do when we have less cash for skincare products yet need our basics like collagen cream restocked? Sarah Jones shares her thoughts on Boot’s range of collagen creams.

The Boot’s skincare range including serum and eye cream is most definitely affordable at just £12 each for 50ml jars. They are a bargain compared with premium No.7 lines Future Renew and Menopause Skincare. The packaging doesn’t look budget either with sleek thick matte glass and a metallic purple lid, looking great on any bathroom shelf (although label advice is to keep out of bright sunlight).

Collagen cream

It’s not ‘new’ news that we should wear SPF during the daytime including during the winter months due to photoaging, so it is helpful that there’s SPF 30 in Boots Collagen Day Cream. Some brands will have you apply it separately after moisturising, but that’s not for me so this works perfectly as a 2-in-1. It has a thick and rich consistency, it advertises as non-greasy, and for my much drier skin it isn’t, but it might be a little heavy on some oilier skin types. There is a scent that I don’t find overpowering, but it has a really long list of ingredients so if you want something more natural this may not be for you.

Despite being a long-time user of the Collagen Day Cream, this is the first time that I have used Boots Collagen Night Cream. I expected more richness and heaviness but it’s surprisingly light. It absorbs beautifully and moisturises the skin overnight as they claim, waking up with no dryness, even with the seasonal challenges of winter central heating. That said, if I had to make a choice, as soon as payday hits, I’d rather ‘treat’ my face with No.7 Future Renew night cream, which makes a substantial impact on my morning face when applied.

After doing a little online research I found an interesting YouTube video by Rob from Mad About Skin who calls this product “viral”. It was interesting to discover that the collagen molecules in topical creams are too large to penetrate the skin but are a great surface humectant. Thanks, Rob (every day is a school day)! I highly recommend his content for knowledgeable insight into the active ingredients of skincare products

The advertising material for this product line is very ‘anti-wrinkle’ and ‘youth activating’ which I tend to avoid but, if you can look past the anti-aging language this could be a smart choice for when you are watching your pennies. I’m not entirely convinced about their claim to visibly reduce the appearance of wrinkles but it feels comforting to use, even without using an oil or serum as a base. During winter that’s a welcome relief if you suffer from your facial skin feeling taut. My takeaway is that I’ll continue to keep the day cream as an occasional bathroom beauty staple when I’m feeling the pinch and will add the night cream too.
