Wellness Retreats – discover what wellness works for you

FEATURE sound

Wellness retreats are a chance to discover what wellness practices work for you. In today’s world, wellness can feel like an all-consuming lifestyle. We’re bombarded with messages telling us we must be the fittest, the calmest, the most flexible version of ourselves, and the pressure to keep up can be exhausting!

Whether it’s perfecting your yoga practice, mastering your nervous system, or plunging into freezing ice baths every morning, the pressure to “do it all” is constant. But where do we draw the line between healthy pursuits and obsessive tendencies and could a Wellness retreat such as Soulful Hideaways help you discover what works for you?

The ‘Perfect’ Pressure in Wellness

The wellness industry, now a multi-billion-dollar sector, promotes an ever-expanding list of practices, gadgets, and lifestyle habits. Social media, especially, can fuel the idea that we must continuously push ourselves to attain the pinnacle of health. We see influencers advocating daily Pilates challenges, juicing, and extreme endurance sports, and it can feel as though we’re failing if we don’t engage in all these activities.

The problem with this one-size-fits-all approach is that it ignores the uniqueness of every individual. It creates an expectation that if you’re not doing it all—or doing it perfectly—you’re somehow falling short. But can everyone thrive on the same wellness regime? Of course not says Breathwork Specialist Jasmine St Cliere “Wellness for everyone is the first misconception that we need to debunk: wellness is neither a competition nor is there a universal formula that works for all.”

What Works?

The truth is, that certain principles do promote well-being across the board, but they must be adapted to suit everyone. Here’s a breakdown of what has been tried and tested to work, versus what might just be the next fad.

1. Movement: Movement is essential and the type of movement matters. Not everyone needs to be able to run a marathon or twist themselves into advanced yoga poses. The key is to find forms of movement that feel good for your body, whether that takes the form of a daily walk, Pilates, dancing, or swimming. Rather than trying to conform to an external ideal, focus on how movement makes you feel energised, connected, and free.

2. Nutrition: There’s no one-size-fits-all diet. What’s most important is eating in a way that nourishes your body and provides lasting energy. Current wellness fads push everything from intermittent fasting to juice cleanses, but what matters most is sustainability and balance. Eating real, good quality foods. Listen to your body’s needs rather than following restrictive rules that may not work for you in the long run.

3. Rest and Recovery: This is often the most overlooked part of wellness, especially in a culture that celebrates hustle and constant activity. True wellness includes adequate rest, sleep, and recovery time. Whether it’s through practices like meditation, time in nature, or simply prioritising sleep, allowing your nervous system to rest so that your body can repair is key for overall health.

4. Mental and Emotional Wellbeing: Wellness isn’t just about the physical. Practices that support mental and emotional health—like breathwork, somatic therapies, and journaling—are equally vital. Often, we focus on the external and forget that emotional balance is just as important for long-term health and happiness.

5. Nervous System Health: Breathwork specialist Jasmine says “Many of us spend a significant amount of time in a dysregulated state, grappling with stress and anxiety that can ultimately lead to burnout. This leaves our nervous systems yearning for safety and stability”. She suggests prioritising nervous system health with body-based therapies such as somatic breathwork, movement, and meditation which is crucial for achieving a sense of ease and balance in our lives.

Fads to Be Wary Of

While some wellness trends offer real benefits, others may do more harm than good. Extreme diets and detoxes, overly rigid exercise regimens or promises to heal your trauma in 10 days can lead to burnout and imbalances in your body. Rather than chasing the latest wellness trend, it’s crucial to ask yourself: does this feel good for me? Is it sustainable? Or is it a quick fix that might do more harm than good?

We Are All Different

One of the most important aspects of true wellness is recognising that everybody is different. What works wonders for one person may not resonate with another, and that’s okay. The wellness journey is deeply personal, and the goal should not be to conform but to cultivate a relationship with practices that nourish you and your unique body.
